Esophageal carcinoma is amongst the prevalent malignancies worldwide, characterized by unclear molecular classifications and varying clinical outcomes. The PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling, one of the frequently perturbed dysregulated pathways in human malignancies, has instigated the development of various inhibitory agents targeting this pathway, but many ESCC patients exhibit intrinsic or adaptive resistance to these inhibitors. Here, we aim to explore the reasons for the insensitivity of ESCC patients to mTOR inhibitors. We assessed the sensitivity to rapamycin in various ESCC cell lines by determining their respective IC50 values and found that cells with a low level of HMGA1 were more tolerant to rapamycin. Subsequent experiments have supported this finding. Through a transcriptome sequencing, we identified a crucial downstream effector of HMGA1, FKBP12, and found that FKBP12 was necessary for HMGA1-induced cell sensitivity to rapamycin. HMGA1 interacted with ETS1, and facilitated the transcription of FKBP12. Finally, we validated this regulatory axis in in vivo experiments, where HMGA1 deficiency in transplanted tumors rendered them resistance to rapamycin. Therefore, we speculate that mTOR inhibitor therapy for individuals exhibiting a reduced level of HMGA1 or FKBP12 may not work. Conversely, individuals exhibiting an elevated level of HMGA1 or FKBP12 are more suitable candidates for mTOR inhibitor treatment.

Aboveground biomass (AGB) is regarded as a critical variable in monitoring crop growth and yield. The use of hyperspectral remote sensing has emerged as a viable method for the rapid and precise monitoring of AGB. Due to the extensive dimensionality and volume of hyperspectral data, it is crucial to effectively reduce data dimensionality and select sensitive spectral features to enhance the accuracy of rice AGB estimation models. At present, derivative transform and feature selection algorithms have become important means to solve this problem. However, few studies have systematically evaluated the impact of derivative spectrum combined with feature selection algorithm on rice AGB estimation. To this end, at the Xiaogang Village (Chuzhou City, China) Experimental Base in 2020, this study used an ASD FieldSpec handheld 2 ground spectrometer (Analytical Spectroscopy Devices, Boulder, Colorado, USA) to obtain canopy spectral data at the critical growth stage (tillering, jointing, booting, heading, and maturity stages) of rice, and evaluated the performance of the recursive feature elimination (RFE) and Boruta feature selection algorithm through partial least squares regression (PLSR), principal component regression (PCR), support vector machine (SVM) and ridge regression (RR). Moreover, we analyzed the importance of the optimal derivative spectrum. The findings indicate that (1) as the growth stage progresses, the correlation between rice canopy spectrum and AGB shows a trend from high to low, among which the first derivative spectrum (FD) has the strongest correlation with AGB. (2) The number of feature bands selected by the Boruta algorithm is 19~35, which has a good dimensionality reduction effect. (3) The combination of FD-Boruta-PCR (FB-PCR) demonstrated the best performance in estimating rice AGB, with an increase in R² of approximately 10% ~ 20% and a decrease in RMSE of approximately 0.08% ~ 14%. (4) The best estimation stage is the booting stage, with R2 values between 0.60 and 0.74 and RMSE values between 1288.23 and 1554.82 kg/hm2. This study confirms the accuracy of hyperspectral remote sensing in estimating vegetation biomass and further explores the theoretical foundation and future direction for monitoring rice growth dynamics.

A photoactive covalent organic framework (COF) was built from metalloporphyrin and bipyridine monomers and single-atomic Pt sites were subsequently installed. Integrating photosensitizing metalloporphyrin and substrate-activating Pt(bpy) moieties in a single solid facilitates multielectron transfer and accelerates photocatalytic hydrogen evolution with a maximum production rate of 80.4 mmol h-1 gPt-1 and turnover frequency (TOF) of 15.7 h-1 observed. This work demonstrates that incorporation of single-atomic metal sites with photoactive COFs greatly enhances photocatalytic activity and provides an effective strategy for the design and construction of novel photocatalysts.

Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) is closely correlated with tumorigenesis in colorectal cancer (CRC). We aimed to investigate the effects of host norepinephrine on the carcinogenicity of F. nucleatum in CRC and reveal the underlying mechanism. The results revealed that both norepinephrine and bacterial quorum sensing (QS) molecule auto-inducer-2 (AI-2) were positively associated with the progression of F. nucleatum related CRC (p < 0.01). In vitro studies, norepinephrine induced upregulation of QS-associated genes and promoted the virulence and proliferation of F. nucleatum. Moreover, chronic stress significantly increased the colon tumour burden of ApcMin/+ mice infected with F. nucleatum (p < 0.01), which was decreased by a catecholamine inhibitor (p < 0.001). Our findings suggest that stress-induced norepinephrine may promote the progression of F. nucleatum related CRC via bacterial QS signalling. These preliminary data provide a novel strategy for the management of pathogenic bacteria by targeting host hormones-bacterial QS inter-kingdom signalling.

This study investigated the effects of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) on rapid sludge bulking control and fast aerobic granular sludge (AGS) formation by adding 20 % of EBPR activated sludge to the bulking activated sludge (BAS) reactor. The results indicate that activating EBPR activity swiftly improved BAS settleability within 16 days, thus resolving sludge bulking issues. Subsequently, a settling time-based selection was employed, resulting in the BAS granulation within another 16 days. The rapid achievement of EBPR activity improved the BAS settleability and facilitated the formation of sludge aggregates, thereby expediting BAS granulation. Inhibition of filamentous bacteria and enrichment of slow-growing organisms contributed to both sludge bulking control and aerobic granulation. Furthermore, the increase in proteins/polysaccharides ratio facilitated the granulation process. Additionally, total nitrogen removal increased from 59.4 % to 71.7 % because of the mature AGS formation. This study provided an approach to simultaneously control sludge bulking and promote aerobic granulation.

BACKGROUND: As a primary vector of bluetongue virus (BTV) in the US, seasonal abundance and diel flight activity of Culicoides sonorensis has been documented, but few studies have examined how time of host-seeking activity is impacted by environmental factors. This knowledge is essential for interpreting surveillance data and modeling pathogen transmission risk. METHODS: The diel host-seeking activity of C. sonorensis was studied on a California dairy over 3 years using a time-segregated trap baited with CO2. The relationship between environmental variables and diel host-seeking activity (start, peak, and duration of activity) of C. sonorensis was evaluated using multiple linear regression. Fisher's exact test and paired-sample z-test were used to evaluate the seasonal difference and parity difference on diel host-seeking activity. RESULTS: Host-seeking by C. sonorensis began and reached an activity peak before sunset at a higher frequency during colder months relative to warmer months. The time that host-seeking activity occurred was associated low and high daily temperature as well as wind speed at sunset. Colder temperatures and a greater diurnal temperature range were associated with an earlier peak in host-seeking. Higher wind speeds at sunset were associated with a delayed peak in host-seeking and a shortened duration of host-seeking. Parous midges reached peak host-seeking activity slightly later than nulliparous midges, possibly because of the need for oviposition by gravid females before returning to host-seeking. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that during colder months C. sonorensis initiates host-seeking and reaches peak host-seeking activity earlier relative to sunset, often even before sunset, compared to warmer months. Therefore, the commonly used UV light-baited traps are ineffective for midge surveillance before sunset. Based on this study, surveillance methods that do not rely on light trapping would provide a more accurate estimate of host-biting risk across seasons. The association of environmental factors to host-seeking shown in this study can be used to improve modeling or prediction of host-seeking activity. This study identified diurnal temperature range as associated with host-seeking activity, suggesting that Culicoides may respond to a rapidly decreasing temperature by shifting to an earlier host-seeking time, though this association needs further study.

Although exogenous calcitonin gene­related peptide (CGRP) protects against hyperoxia­induced lung injury (HILI), the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The present study attempted to elucidate the molecular mechanism by which CGRP protects against hyperoxia­induced alveolar cell injury. Human alveolar A549 cells were treated with 95% hyperoxia to establish a hyperoxic cell injury model. ELISA was performed to detect the CGRP secretion. Immunofluorescence, quantitative (q)PCR, and western blotting were used to detect the expression and localization of CGRP receptor (CGRPR) and transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1). Cell counting kit­8 and flow cytometry were used to examine the proliferation and apoptosis of treated cells. Digital calcium imaging and patch clamp were used to analyze the changes in intracellular Ca2+ signaling and membrane currents induced by CGRP in A549 cells. The mRNA and protein expression levels of Cyclin D1, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), Bcl­2 and Bax were detected by qPCR and western blotting. The expression levels of CGRPR and TRPV1 in A549 cells were significantly downregulated by hyperoxic treatment, but there was no significant difference in CGRP release between cells cultured under normal air and hyperoxic conditions. CGRP promoted cell proliferation and inhibited apoptosis in hyperoxia, but selective inhibitors of CGRPR and TRPV1 channels could effectively attenuate these effects; TRPV1 knockdown also attenuated this effect. CGRP induced Ca2+ entry via the TRPV1 channels and enhanced the membrane non­selective currents through TRPV1 channels. The CGRP­induced increase in intracellular Ca2+ was reduced by inhibiting the phospholipase C (PLC)/protein kinase C (PKC) pathway. Moreover, PLC and PKC inhibitors attenuated the effects of CGRP in promoting cell proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis. In conclusion, exogenous CGRP acted by inversely regulating the function of TRPV1 channels in alveolar cells. Importantly, CGRP protected alveolar cells from hyperoxia­induced injury via the CGRPR/TRPV1/Ca2+ axis, which may be a potential target for the prevention and treatment of the HILI.

OBJECTIVE: Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an increasingly important role in various autoimmune diseases. We aimed to characterize the expression profiles of lncRNAs in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from RA patients and to assess the potential of these lncRNAs as RA biomarkers. METHODS: Whole-transcriptome sequencing was used to establish a lncRNA expression profile. A total of 155 RA patients, 145 healthy controls, 59 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and 59 primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) patients were recruited for this study. Four candidate lncRNAs (linc00152, lnc-ADM-1, ITSN1-2, and lnc-FTH1-7) were validated via qRT-PCR in independent samples, and their expression, association with RA clinical features and value as RA biomarkers were evaluated. RESULTS: Linc00152 and lnc-ADM-1 exhibited upregulated expression (p = 0.001, p = 0.014, respectively), while ITSN1-2 and lnc-FTH1-7 exhibited downregulated expression (both p < 0.001, respectively) in RA patients compared to controls. Lnc-ADM-1 and lnc-FTH1-7 expression correlated positively with the C4 level (p = 0.016 and p = 0.012, respectively). ITSN1-2 levels were negatively associated with CRP levels (p = 0.024). Linc00152, lnc-ADM-1, ITSN1-2, and lnc-FTH1-7 showed potential as RA biomarkers, with the four-lncRNA panel distinguishing RA patients from controls, SLE patients, or pSS patients (AUC = 0.886, 0.746, and 0.749, respectively). CONCLUSION: The altered expression of linc00152, lnc-ADM-1, ITSN1-2 and lnc-FTH1-7 in RA patients suggested that these genes may serve as potential biomarkers for RA and could be involved in its pathogenesis.

Climate change has had a significant impact on many marine organisms. To investigate the effects of environmental changes on deep-water benthic fishes, we selected the genus Oplegnathus and applied species distribution modeling and ecological niche modeling. From the last glacial maximum to the present, the three Oplegnathus species (O. conwayi, O. robinsoni, and O. peaolopesi) distributed in the Cape of Good Hope region of southern Africa experienced fitness zone fluctuations of 39.9%, 13%, and 5.7%, respectively. In contrast, O. fasciatus and O. punctatus, which were primarily distributed in the western Pacific Ocean, had fitness zone fluctuations of -6.5% and 11.7%, respectively. Neither the O. insignis nor the O. woodward varied by more than 5% over the period. Under future environmental conditions, the range of variation in fitness zones for the three southern African Oplegnathus species was expected to be between -30.8% and -26.5%, while the range of variation in fitness zones for the two western Pacific stonefish species was expected to remain below 13%. In addition, the range of variation in the fitness zones of the O. insignis was projected to be between -2.3% and 7.1%, and the range of variation in the fitness zones of the O. woodward is projected to be between -5.7% and -2%. The results indicated that O. fasciatus and O. punctatus had a wide distribution and high expansion potential, while Oplegnathus species might have originated in western Pacific waters. Our results showed that benthic fishes were highly adaptable to extreme environments, such as the last glacial maximum. The high ecological niche overlap between Oplegnathus species in the same region suggested that they competed with each other. Future research could explore the impacts of environmental change on marine organisms and make conservation and management recommendations.

Backgrounds: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a highly malignant gastrointestinal malignancy with a poor prognosis, which imposes a significant burden on patients and healthcare providers globally. Previous studies have established that genes related to glutamine metabolism play a crucial role in the development of CRC. However, no studies have yet explored the prognostic significance of these genes in CRC. Methods: CRC patient data were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), while glutamine metabolism-related genes were obtained from the Molecular Signatures Database (MSigDB) database. Univariate COX regression analysis and LASSO Cox regression were utilized to identify 15 glutamine metabolism-related genes associated with CRC prognosis. The risk scores were calculated and stratified into high-risk and low-risk groups based on the median risk score. The model's efficacy was assessed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Cox regression analysis was employed to determine the risk score as an independent prognostic factor for CRC. Differential immune cell infiltration between the high-risk and low-risk groups was assessed using the ssGSEA method. The clinical applicability of the model was validated by constructing nomograms based on age, gender, clinical staging, and risk scores. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was used to detect the expression levels of core genes. Results: We identified 15 genes related to glutamine metabolism in CRC: NLGN1, RIMKLB, UCN, CALB1, SYT4, WNT3A, NRCAM, LRFN4, PHGDH, GRM1, CBLN1, NRG1, GLYATL1, CBLN2, and VWC2. Compared to the high-risk group, the low-risk group demonstrated longer overall survival (OS) for CRC. Clinical correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between the risk score and the clinical stage and TNM stage of CRC. Immune correlation analysis indicated a predominance of Th2 cells in the low-risk group. The nomogram exhibited excellent discriminatory ability for OS in CRC. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the core gene CBLN1 was expressed at a lower level in CRC, while GLYATL1 was expressed at a higher level. Conclusions: In summary, we have successfully identified and comprehensively analyzed a gene signature associated with glutamine metabolism in CRC for the first time. This gene signature consistently and reliably predicts the prognosis of CRC patients, indicating its potential as a metabolic target for individuals with CRC.

BACKGROUND: Life satisfaction is a comprehensive psychological index to measure a person's life quality. Previous studies have found that population sociological factors, physiological factors, psychological factors, and social factors all affect life satisfaction, but few studies have looked at the role of stable psychological factors, such as personality, in life satisfaction. Thus, this study combined previous research results and theories to study the current situation of college students' life satisfaction and its correlation with personality. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to comprehensively assess the life satisfaction levels among university students enrolled in a medical college in China, explore their correlation with various demographic factors and personality traits, identify potential areas for intervention, and provide recommendations for improving students' overall well-being and fostering the development of a positive and healthy personality. METHODS: A stratified cluster sampling method was used to select college students from a university. The questionnaire consists of general characteristics, a life satisfaction scale, and the Big Five Inventory. Descriptive statistical methods were conducted to describe the college students' life satisfaction status; an analysis of variance was performed to compare the score of life satisfaction among different demographic features; and the correlation between the score of life satisfaction and the Big Five Inventory was also analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 3116 subjects were included in this survey. The life satisfaction of females was higher than that of males in the dimensions of family, friends, school, and overall satisfaction (p<0.05). The life satisfaction of males in the self dimension was higher than that of females (p<0.05). The life satisfaction of different weight types had statistical significance in the life dimension (p<0.05). The life satisfaction of family, school, and overall well-being among smoking college students was lower than that of non-smoking college students (p<0.05). The life satisfaction of non-drinking college students in family, friends, life, school, and overall life satisfaction scores was higher than those of drinking college students (p<0.05). College students who get plenty of sleep a day (more than eight hours) scored higher life satisfaction scores in the self dimension than sleep-deprived college students (p<0.05). In addition to the family dimension, students taking long physical exercise breaks every day had higher life satisfaction scores in every dimension than students lacking physical exercise (p<0.05). The mean score of personality in the agreeableness and openness dimensions is the highest. Correlation analysis showed that the personality score in each dimension was positively correlated with the life satisfaction score in each dimension except for the neuroticism dimension of personality (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The life satisfaction of college students is different for different lifestyles. The student management department should pay attention to the physical and mental health of college students with low life satisfaction and further find out the reasons for the difference in life satisfaction. Meanwhile, education should be strengthened for college students and encourage them to give up smoking and alcohol; strengthen physical training; and university education should strengthen the personality cultivation of college students.

OBJECTIVES: To understand the role of high-quality home health care for fall prevention. DESIGN: A 100% sample of national Medicare claims and home health survey data (2015-2017) were used to assess fall injuries and receipt of a fall risk assessment among recently hospitalized Medicare fee-for-service home health users aged ≥66 years. Subanalyses examined patients by prior fall history status and hospital admission diagnosis type (eg, neurologic, respiratory, cardiovascular, infection, and orthopedic diagnoses). An instrumental variables design addressed potential endogeneity in home health care use by patient fall risk. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Home health agencies and Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries. METHODS: Multivariate regression and instrumental variables. RESULTS: Among 962,610 patients with hospital discharges to home health, being treated by home health agencies with the highest star ratings in a person's zip code was associated with a 1.8-percentage point (ppt) (95% CI: 0.1, 3.5; P = .03) higher likelihood of receipt of fall risk assessment. There was no overall change in 30-day (-0.6 ppt, 95% CI: -1.3, 0.1; P = .09), 15-day (-0.3 ppt, 95% CI: -0.0.8, 0.2; P = .35), or 7-day fall injury risk (-0.2 ppt, 95% CI: -0.5, 0.1; P = .22), but a 1.9-ppt (95% CI: -3.9, -0.02; P = .048) lower 30-day fall injury risk for individuals with a history of falls. Effects were directionally similar by diagnosis type. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Fall injury risk is reduced at higher-rated home health agencies. Star ratings may be adequate indicators of quality for key outcomes not explicitly measured in the ratings.

INTRODUCTION: The prevention and control of hospital-acquired infections remain a significant challenge worldwide, as textiles used in hospital wards are highly involved in transmission processes. Herein, we report a new antibacterial medical fabric used to prepare hospital pillowcases, bottom sheets, and quilt covers for controlling and reducing hospital-acquired infections. METHOD: The medical fabric was composed of blended yarns of staple polyester and degradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate co-3-hydroxyvalerate)/polylactide fibres, which were then coated with polylactide oligomers, an environmentally friendly and safe antimicrobial agent with excellent thermal stability in high-temperature laundry. A clinical trial was conducted with emphasis on the bacterial species that were closely related to the infection cases in the trial hospital. RESULT: After 7 days of usage, 94% of PET/PHBV/PLA-PLAO fabric could keep less than 20 CFU/100 cm2 of total bacterial amount, meeting hygiene and cleanliness standards. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the potential of fabrics containing polyhydroxyalkanoate oligomers as highly effective, safe, and long-lasting antimicrobial medical textiles that can effectively reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired infections.

A series of NaGd1-x-ySiO4: y Dy3+ - x Eu3+ phosphors were synthesized by a high-temperature solid-phase method. The optimal doping ion concentration of Dy3+ ions for this phosphor was determined to be 1% from the emission spectra. The energy transfer between Dy3+ and Eu3+ ions at 351 nm was investigated by photoluminescence spectra and fluorescence decay curves. At the excitation wavelengths of 275 nm, 351 nm, 366 nm, and 394 nm, a change from yellow to white to red light can be realized by adjusting the doping concentration of Eu/Dy ions. Particularly, by testing the temperature-dependent fluorescence spectrum of the phosphor, it can be found that the luminous intensity of the phosphor is as high as 96% when 394 nm excitation is employed at 413 K. It was the maximum at this temperature comparing with other phosphors as far as we know. The color coordinate values show that the NaGd1-x-ySiO4: x Dy3+ - y Eu3+ phosphors are very close to the white light color coordinates (x = 0.33, y = 0.33) under 351 nm excitation. Meanwhile, the correlated color temperature is between 5062 - 7104 K. These results indicate that this phosphor is a promising candidate for high-quality WLED.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most prevalent bacterial infectious diseases worldwide. However, the resistance of urinary pathogens to other UTI antibiotics such as trimethoprim and trimethoprim/sulphamethoxazole increased. Pivmecillinam is a prodrug of mecillinam, which is effective for the treatment of urinary tract infections. The purpose of this study was to assess the safety, and pharmacokinetics of pivmecillinam and mecillinam after single- and multiple-dose oral administration of pivmecillinam tablets in healthy Chinese subjects. The study also investigated the profile of urinary excretion of mecillinam, as well as the effect of food and gender on the pharmacokinetics of pivmecillinam and mecillinam. This study was a single-center, open-label phase I study carried out in three groups. In total, 34 subjects were included in the study: group 1-food effect study with pivmecillinam 200 mg (n = 12); group 2-single- and multiple-dose study with pivmecillinam 400 mg (n = 12); group 3-single dose study with pivmecillinam 600 mg (n = 10). The plasma and urine concentrations of pivmecillinam and mecillinam were measured, and their pharmacokinetics were calculated. Treatment-emergent adverse events were evaluated and recorded in safety assessments for three groups. No severe adverse events were found in this study. After a single dose of pivmecillinam was taken orally, the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) and the area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) of pivmecillinam increased in a dose-proportional manner, nor did mecillinam. Food had significant effects on Cmax and AUC0-t of pivmecillinam and Cmax of mecillinam. The mean cumulative percentage of urine excretion of mecillinam at 0 to 24 h ranged from 35.5 to 44.0%. Urinary cumulative excretion is relative to the drug dose, but the diet and multiple-dose administration did not affect the urinary cumulative excretion rate. The safety and pharmacokinetics of pivmecillinam and mecillinam after single- (200/400/600 mg) or multiple-dose (400 mg) administration were demonstrated in healthy Chinese subjects. Food affected the pharmacokinetics of pivmecillinam and mecillinam.

BACKGROUND: Delayed gastric emptying (DGE) commonly occurs after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). Risk factors for DGE have been reported in open PD but are rarely reported in laparoscopic PD (LPD). This study was designed to evaluate the perioperative risk factors for DGE and secondary DGE after LPD in a single center. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent LPD between October 2014 and April 2023. Demographic data, preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data were collected. The risk factors for DGE and secondary DGE were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 827 consecutive patients underwent LPD. One hundred and forty-two patients (17.2%) developed DGE of any type. Sixty-five patients (7.9%) had type A, 62 (7.5%) had type B, and the remaining 15 (1.8%) had type C DGE. Preoperative biliary drainage (p = 0.032), blood loss (p = 0.014), and 90-day any major complication with Dindo-Clavien score ≥ III (p < 0.001) were independent significant risk factors for DGE. Seventy-six (53.5%) patients were diagnosed with primary DGE, whereas 66 (46.5%) patients had DGE secondary to concomitant complications. Higher body mass index, soft pancreatic texture, and perioperative transfusion were independent risk factors for secondary DGE. Hospital stay and drainage tube removal time were significantly longer in the DGE and secondary DGE groups. CONCLUSION: Identifying patients at an increased risk of DGE and secondary DGE can be used to intervene earlier, avoid potential risk factors, and make more informed clinical decisions to shorten the duration of perioperative management.

Flexible capacitive sensors are widely deployed in wearable smart electronics. Substantial studies have been devoted to constructing characteristic material architectures to improve their electromechanical sensing performance by facilitating the change of the electrode layer spacing. However, the air gaps introduced by the designed material architectures are easily squeezed when subjected to high-pressure loads, resulting in a limited increase in sensitivity over a wide range. To overcome this limitation, in this work, we embed the liquid metal (LM) in the internally interconnected porous structure of a flexible composite foam to fabricate a flexible and high-performance capacitive sensor. Different from the conventional conductive elements filled composite, the incompressible feature of the embedded fluidic LM leads to significantly improved mechanical stability of the composite foam to withstand high pressure loadings, resulting in a wider pressure sensing range from 10 Pa to 260 kPa for our capacitive composite sensor. Simultaneously, the metal conductivity and liquid ductility of the embedded LM endow the as-fabricated capacitive sensor with outstanding mechanical flexibility and pressure sensitivity (up to 1.91 kPa-1). Meanwhile, the LM-embedded interconnected-porous thermoplastic polyurethane/MXene composite sensor also shows excellent reliability over 4000 long-period load cycles, and the response times are merely 60 ms and 110 ms for the loading and unloading processes, respectively. To highlight their advantages in various applications, the as-proposed capacitive sensors are demonstrated to detect human movements and monitor biophysical heart-rate signals. It is believed that our finding could extend the material framework of flexible capacitive sensors and offer new possibilities and solutions in the development of the next-generation wearable electronics.

Natural products, known for their environmental safety, are regarded as a significant basis for the modification and advancement of fungicides. Melatonin, as a low-cost natural indole, exhibits diverse biological functions, including antifungal activity. However, its potential as an antifungal agent has not been fully explored. In this study, a series of melatonin derivatives targeting the mitogen-activated protein kinase (Mps1) protein of fungal pathogens were synthesized based on properties of melatonin, among which the trifluoromethyl-substituted derivative Mt-23 exhibited antifungal activity against seven plant pathogenic fungi, and effectively reduced the severity of crop diseases, including rice blast, Fusarium head blight of wheat and gray mold of tomato. In particular, its EC50 (5.4 µM) against the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae is only one-fourth that of isoprothiolane (22 µM), a commercial fungicide. Comparative analyzes revealed that Mt-23 simultaneously targets the conserved protein kinase Mps1 and lipid protein Cap20. Surface plasmon resonance assays showed that Mt-23 directly binds to Mps1 and Cap20. In this study, we provide a strategy for developing antifungal agents by modifying melatonin, and the resultant melatonin derivative Mt-23 is a commercially valuable, eco-friendly and broad-spectrum antifungal agent to combat crop disease.

Ni-rich cathodes are some of the most promising candidates for advanced lithium-ion batteries, but their available capacities have been stagnant due to the intrinsic Li+ storage sites. Extending the voltage window down can induce the phase transition from O3 to 1T of LiNiO2-derived cathodes to accommodate excess Li+ and dramatically increase the capacity. By setting the discharge cutoff voltage of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 to 1.4 V, we can reach an extremely high capacity of 393 mAh g-1 and an energy density of 1070 Wh kg-1 here. However, the phase transition causes fast capacity decay and related structural evolution is rarely understood, hindering the utilization of this feature. We find that the overlithiated phase transition is self-limiting, which will transform into solid-solution reaction with cycling and make the cathode degradation slow down. This is attributed to the migration of abundant transition metal ions into lithium layers induced by the overlithiation, allowing the intercalation of overstoichiometric Li+ into the crystal without the O3 framework change. Based on this, the wide-potential cycling stability is further improved via a facile charge-discharge protocol. This work provides deep insight into the overstoichiometric Li+ storage behaviors in conventional layered cathodes and opens a new avenue toward high-energy batteries.

BACKGROUND: Abrocitinib was newly approved for treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis. The present study was to assess abrocitinib-related adverse events (AEs) using the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). METHODS: Disproportionality analyses, including the reporting odds ratio (ROR), the proportional reporting ratio (PRR), the Bayesian confidence propagation neural network (BCPNN), and the multi-item gamma Poisson shrinker (MGPS) algorithms, were employed to quantify the signals of abrocitinib-related AEs. RESULTS: A total of 3,177,744 reports of AEs were collected from the FAERS database, of which 1370 reports were identified with abrocitinib as the primary suspect drug. Abrocitinib-induced adverse events (AEs) occurred across 27 system organ classes (SOCs). A total of 68 preferred terms (PTs) with significant disproportionality, meeting the criteria of all four algorithms simultaneously, were identified. Unexpected significant AEs, such as increased blood cholesterol, venous embolism, hypoacusis, cellulitis, and tuberculosis, might also occur. The median onset time for abrocitinib-associated AEs was 182 days (interquartile range [IQR] 47-527 days). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study were consistent with clinical observations. Additionally, unexpected safety signals for abrocitinib were identified, which provided supportive information for the safety profile of abrocitinib. Prospective clinical studies are warranted to validate these findings.
